Big Sister

A kinetic sculpture referencing that which is unseen but always surrounds us like the wind and weather.

Ellie Murphy explores the relationship of personal and cultural nostalgia in subject matter, material, and method. Her work straddles the line between childhood and adulthood while questioning the borders of fine art and traditional craft forms. Murphy sees interdependence between the multiplicities of cultures in our world and makes sculptures as a way of recognizing and playing with the unintended and humorous connections between them. Ellie has exhibited extensively throughout the United States. She lives and works in Queens, NY.

Wendy Letven is a visual artist whose paintings, sculptures, and installations incorporate an ever-evolving, expansive formal language of biomorphic and geometric shapes, patterns of energy, and natural phenomena. Figure/ground reversals, color harmonies, contrasts, and other spatial illusions challenge perceptions of two- and three dimensionality. Letven has received numerous awards and grants and is in many private collections throughout the country. She teaches art and design at Parsons School of Design in New York. She lives and works in the New York area.

Paul Santoleri is best known for his drawing installations and wall-sized murals that can be found in public spaces around the world. His work encompasses a variety of media, but endlessly returns to the stories found in the drawn line. He has received numerous honors and awards, including awards from the Pollack-Krasner Foundation and the Independence Foundation. Most recently, Santoleri installed a massive tile mural at Philadelphia International Airport. He lives and works in Philadelphia, P.A.

Tadashi Hashimoto positions the forms of his sculptures so that space becomes the focus. His works articulate qualities of gravity, motion, weight and light. Tadashi’s large scale and site specific outdoor sculptures have been shown nationally and internationally, including at Socrates Sculpture Park, L.I.C., NY; ART/OMI, International Artists Residency, Ghent, NY; Maiden Lane Exhibition Space, NYC; Cazenovia College Art Gallery, Sculpture Court, Cazenovia, NY; and Łódź, Poland. He lives and works in Beacon, N.Y.

Gints Grinbergs works with a variety of metals, including copper, bronze, and stainless steel, to create open forms. Fascinated by pictures taken by the Hubble telescope and electron microscopes, Grinbergs makes associations with galaxies and molecular structures. His sculptures have been featured at such venues as the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park, Lincoln, MA; Michael Beauchemin Gallery, Boston, MA; and the Lever House Gallery, New York, NY. He lives and works in Dedham, MA.

Emil Alzamora harnesses a wide range of materials and techniques to deliver unexpected interpretations of the sculpted human figure. He often distorts, elongates, deconstructs, or encases his forms to reveal an emotional or physical situation, or to tell a story. Alzamora’s works have been exhibited in multiple solo and group shows, many national and international art fairs as well as the United Nations Building, Pepsico World Headquarters, The Queens Museum of Art, The Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art, and The Museum of Biblical Art in Dallas. His work has been reviewed by publications such as The New York Times, The Brooklyn Rail, The L Magazine, El Diario, Boston Metro News, Juxtapoz, High Fructose, ArteFuse and Cool Hunting. He currently lives and works in Beacon, NY.

Streaming Spirits II

The artistic career of Phyllis Hammond, a Springs sculptor, began almost 80 years ago when, as an 8-year-old, she took a one-hour train trip all by herself from Melrose, Mass., to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston to sketch the Greek and Roman sculptures there. Not too much has fazed her since then.
